Believe Me

The final (full) track off the debut album, Thief & Lovethis is a song about my lovely wife, Christine:  the emeralds are her eyes, the sun is her smile, and the “tears of heaven” are obviously hers (more on that in a second).  (SAPPY alert!)  I don’t think more than a day ever goes by in which I’m not led to pause and wonder on the remarkably beautiful person that she is, and how blessed I am beyond words that she is in my life.  Christine is a blooming beacon of hope and joy and light.  When she comes down with a cold or the flu or something, my world gets dim.  Without question or hesitation, I’m a better man because of her.

My personal favorite on this song is verse 3:

You’d believe me if I told you
I have seen the tears of heaven
Grace and fury in a single drop of water
Would you believe me if I said I’ve seen the rain’s creation
Electricity in motion

A few things that I love about it.  First, it’s one thing to be with a person when they are crying, but it’s another depth of relationship altogether to possess the intimate knowledge of what it is that brings a certain person to tears, to know what breaks their heart.  That’s what I mean by, “I’ve seen the rain’s creation.”  Second, I absolutely love the power in “Grace and fury in a single drop of water;”  and the truth that tears may be brought on by either.

I think this may have been the last song that we tracked for the album, and my vocal take on it was possibly the last main requirement for the entire project.  When I delivered it, I really let it fly on the very last chorus, jumping up an octave on “inside out.”  One of the band members came in from the control room and applauded the performance but graciously wondered if we should take such a delicate song in that direction at the end.  I understood what he meant, but I told him I had to.

I hope you enjoy it, and I hope someday you get the pleasure of meeting her.

You’d believe me if I told you
I have seen the northern lights?
Emeralds lit up like fireflies
Would you believe me if I said I’ve seen ‘em in daylight
Something of a mystery

You’d believe me if I told you
I have seen the sun’s escape?
For every waltz that sets, another wakes
Would you believe me if I said I’ve heard the lullaby it sings
To those it lulls to sleep

I want to be the bridge beneath your breakers
I want to be the moon that leads your tide
I want to be the hurricane turns you inside out

You’d believe me if I told you
I have seen the tears of heaven
Grace and fury in a single drop of water
Would you believe me if I said I’ve seen the rain’s creation
Electricity in motion

I want to be the bridge beneath your breakers
I want to be the moon that leads your tide
I want to be the hurricane turns you upside down

And you’d believe me if you saw her
If you knew her you’d believe me.
You’d not question all I’ve said
And you’d have your own stories
Once you’ve seen her eyes and felt her smile
Of how my lovely glides on love and joy
But don’t cross her
